Old and new music from Northeastern Brazil: Forro, Choros, Candomblé of Salvador; Music of Heitor Villa-Lobos
For the month of June we will be spending a lot of time in Brazil. Today we will hear music from North-eastern Brazil, particularly Forro and pre-WWII Choros composers from Pernambuco, as well as some historic recordings of Candomblé musicians and singers from Salvador, Bahia. We will hear both very traditional Forro (with its basic instrumentation of accordion, triangle, and Zambuba drum) and newer Forro featuring wider and sometimes electronic instrumentation. The Pernambuco Choros featured are primarily compositions from the 30's and 40's but performed in unusual string arrangements.
Candomblé is the syncretic religion of African slaves brought to Brazil formed particularly in the early 19th century. These Africans were mostly Yoruba from southern Nigeria today, as well as some Bantu and Fon from West Africa. They preserved a lot of their African culture which persists to today, particularly in Salvador, the capital of the North-eastern state of Bahia. And music is very important, the name Candomblé meaning "Dance in Honour of the Gods". We hear some recordings made in Salvador made in 1941-1942.
We will also hear Villa-Lobos' 6th String Quartet, which was inspired by the music from the Northeast.
There may be a few unexpected detours as well!
LAST CHANCE ON DEMAND to listen to March 7 2013 show on-demand, with concert recordings from Live in the Desert in Mali.
