This past week I saw several superb concerts at the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival. One of them was a collaboration between Sengalese kora player and singer Ablaye Cissoko and Persian-Canadian brothers Kiya and Ziya Tabassian. Two of my very favourite music traditions together, Manden music from West Africa and Persian classical. It was exquisite, a piece based in Manden tradition would be playing then suddenly Kiya would start to sing some impassioned melismatic Persian melody in Farsi, divine! They have not released a record together yet, but one must be on the way. Instead, today we hear them individually. "Le griot rouge" by Ablaye Cissoko is his telling of the legendary story of the first Kora maker and musician, Dially Mady Wouling. Ablaye Cissoko has gone on to create a multi-media, multicultural performance called Mande Symphony in New York City and elsewhere. Ablaye Cissoko is a very talented, sensitive musician, we will be hearing a lot more from him on my show!
