Performers can be funny. Take Sharon Van Etten, she outta Brooklyn. Her songs are usually sad-ish, dramatic etc. Going back easily 15 years now, I'm at Maverick's for her show, and this little woman's joshing with (I thought) her boyfriend (turns out it's the drummer), trying to bum Canadian coins off him for some nuts from one of those standing machines in the lobby. Anyway, it was before the show, I didn't know anyone, I quipped something at her for wheedling money out of him, and she smiled brightly, and wham, put out her hand and offered me some nuts! It was Sharon Van Etten. Bright and happy and everything. The show was, well, quite good, her stuff... But the contrast I saw between person and stage persona remained.
