I'll be listening to your show in the car, and from afar... But here are, below, a few impressions from last week's Braids show at Club SAW.

BRAIDS show at Club SAW, 1st June 2023 It was a spectacular performance. Raphaelle Standell-Preston showed that she hasn’t lost a thing since that first recording, Native Speaker. I’m not really qualified to comment all that much on her, or the band’s, progression: I didn’t follow the next three albums, outside of occasionally hearing a cut here or there, probably on CKCU. Her voice, what a voice! She can still go into that high, Mariah Carey “whisper register”, but had the taste and restraint to only go there perhaps three times, all told. Great form. I’d forgotten that her voice is an absolute treasure. The drums and percussion were excellent, as were the synth keys; I don’t want to give them short shrift, but words fail. Top level stuff, very self-assured, musically essential. The string quartet, though perhaps not as necessary, did add texture and depth to the mix. They were one cello and three violins or violas, not sure, as I stayed in the back where the sound is best. The quartet were onstage for most of the time, except around the end, when Braids did a few hits from the past, for instance Miniskirt. The sound was excellent, mostly not requiring ear plugs. And the stage light play was also better than expected, quite effective. Pro level. The opener, Orchidae, is the budding solo act of the lead singer of Pony Girl, Yolande Laroche. She also was excellent, much better than mere “opener quality”. Her offerings were not unlike Braids’ in musical kinship: Yolande indeed recounted how Raphaelle’s band was her inspiration for getting into music in 2013 or ‘14.

Tuned in...up loud! Humongous Earth Machine jackhammering away rock cliff .... to build ugly plastic cancerous material puke-beige monster home in woods....so they can stay inside all the time - cept race away in big vehicle....to buy more shit... I'll just keep fiddlin' while fires edge closer.... Peace & Love! lost ya for couple of minutes...;-)
