Funny, Sharon Van Etten 'always' sounds depressingly sad in her songs, or somewhat down anyway, yet, when I ran across her at Mavericks, a few years ago (2011?), she was peppy and perky and having fun teasing the drummer by the coin snacky dispensers. Real bright and happy. But the songs...

Hillbilly, when my grandparents were alive, they had a sugar bush. I have such great memories of collecting sap and making maple syrup in the sugar shack. And agreed on the Black Sheep. They just announced that music will be back soon!

SVE: She was an absolute honey offstage, by them coin machines around the entrance. I kidded her about the fact she'd just wheedled Canadian cash out of her drummer to feed the machine, and indirectly herself, and she turned, stuck out her hand and offered me some of the nuts with a big smile. Charming, small person. I grinned, "I was just wanting to kid them" I said. And then the show. She *can* sing; meaning what you hear on the record she can pretty well put out on stage. Great show. (Some day I'll have to brag about The Arcade Fire at the Sheep.)
