CARLETON UNIVERSITY MUSIC PRESENTS "African Fusion"
Monday March 29th, 7:30pm - Admission free
Kailash Mitel Theatre: http://www2.carleton.ca/km-theatre/
A concert featuring two dynamic student ensembles
FUSION ENSEMBLE: Wayne Eagles - director
featuring the music of Dave Holland, Wayne Krantz, Buddy Emmons & original compositions
The Carleton University Fusion Ensemble (CUFE) focuses on a variety of rock and funk influenced improvisation styles: from Bitches Brew style experimentation to more textural/ECM-like composition; from progressive rock to hip-hop inspired grooves. Ensemble members are students in Carleton's Bachelor of Music program. CUFE's goals include: developing improvisation/interaction/interplay skills in an ensemble setting; providing performance experience and performing opportunities for students; showcasing SSAC/Music students to the broader community while developing a sense of community among the members; and, broadening appreciation of fusion and improvised music repertoires.
WEST AFRICAN RHYTHM ENSEMBLE: Kathy Armstrong - director
featuring the vibrant traditional drum and dance music from Ghana, West Africa
This ensemble gives Carleton students an opportunity to develop a wide range of performance skills as well as an understanding of aspects of African culture through the study and performance of West African music and dance (primarily Ghanaian). Students learn and perform repertoire using traditional instruments from Ghana. They develop a strong sense of individual pulse while playing polyrhythmic music. Emphasis is on learning aurally and using non-verbal communication in an ensemble setting.
