These songwriters are traveling from coast to coast by train for an extremely low emissions cross country tour.
Ben Caplan plays acoustic guitar, banjo, and piano, and sings with a remarkably powerful voice that spans almost four octaves. Stephanie Domet, host of the award winning program Atlantic Airwaves on CBC Radio One said of Ben Caplan, “He sounds by times a little like Freddy Mercury and by others a little like Tom Waits. And then there is his performance: Ben understands that in this business it’s not enough to just climb on stage and sing songs. You need to entertain and engage the audience – and that he does in spades!” His songs ranger from dark to whimsical, but his best are both.
Ben has shared stages with bands like Grizzly Bear, The Dirty Projectors, Dave Marsh, Bop Ensemble, Magnificent Sevens, Amelia Curran, members of Arkells and more. He is touring across Canada in support of his latest EP, Ben Caplan & The Casual Smokers. His first full length album with his band, The Casual Smokers, is scheduled to be released in June 2011.
Nick Everett has been obsessed with music and sound since his early childhood. A musical wizard, he is a talented multi-instrumentalist and a trained singer. He is touring alongside Ben to share his new breed of indie-folk and promote his new release, titled Old Adventure/Love Songs. His songs are largely based on his experiences hitchhiking across Canada, and his reading of the great books of the western cannon.
The popular East Coast music blog Herohill.com posted a review of the songwriter friends in 2009 saying, “Ben Caplan and Nick Everett are two artists not to be missed. From the sweetest serenade to the roughest of bar room stomps, there is a surprising depth and musicianship to the songs.” The two have made quite a splash on the East Coast.
