On March 10th 2010, JAPANTHER will play their first "official" show in the last couple of years. Their last 2 shows in our fair city saw them descending upon Sounds Unlikely (R.I.P.) for a quick afternoon of auditory attack and then swiftly departing off to the bigger city. On this night, they will be here for a night of rock!
The suits will described them to you as this:
"Part Screamers intensity, part Misfits anthemery, part RZA samples/beats and part Lightning Bolt art/freakshow, JAPANTHER is quite likely the most unapologetically artsy-punk-related band since the early days of Sonic Youth, and not in the least bit afraid to get all conceptual 'n' stuff. Utilizing microphones fashioned out of old-fashioned telephone handsets, electronic hardware, cassette decks, a three-stringed bass guitar, and a drumkit, they're like a more playful and even more self-conscious updating of the late-'70s no wave/electronic scene, though a thorough rooting in the skatepunk scene as youngsters keeps things from getting too precious. For the past seven years Japanther has baffled unsuspecting audiences and steadily grown a cult following in the US, Canada, and beyond, whilst working in museums on all types of "Art Projects." Synchronized swimmers, Illegal shows, marionettes and giant puppets have all been employed successfully again and again, all in an attempt to redefine what bands, groups and gangs can do."
That's a long-winded way of saying that this band likes to have fun and wants you to have fun and we should probably all have fun. http://www.myspace.com/japanther
BLACK FEELINGS from Montreal will be playing several shows with JAPANTHER on this leg of their tour. If you haven't caught any of their shows in Ottawa lately here's what the suits have to say:
"Black Feelings are the essence of a power trio: each member of the three-piece exhibiting a great deal of power while the whole remains balanced. Consisting of two former members of Montreal’s Les Angles Morts, the band has developed a unique a hybrid of the British post punk and experimental scenes that spawned the likes of This Heat, Gang of Four and the Pop Group with heavy traces of psychedelic-goth and cold wave. Like American band The Liars, Black Feelings’ penchant for combining a variety of influences to conjure up a sound that is both retro and vitally fresh at the same time. The band’s main vocalist and drummer Owain Lawson is kept busy as he sings and holds down the rhythm section alongside fellow founding member and bassist Brian Mitchell, while the sound is rounded out with shimmering guitar and synth flourishes provided by Kyle Fostner."
This is a long-winded way of saying that this trio of dudes play some spacey powerful rock n' roll that will take you to places you didn't realize you wanted to go to. http://www.myspace.com/bfeelings
SHAKEY ACHES (ex Glads + Golden Familie) are a new band out of Ottawa. The suits have nothing to say about this band since they don't know about them yet. Neither do you. So you better get to this s show early to get yourself acquainted with them.
