Often referred to as a supernatural rapper mom, Sydanie is a magnetic emcee with unheralded energy. A Toronto born, Jamaican-Trinidadian artist, Sydanie is levelling all expectations and setting the bar at new heights for women in the TO hip hop scene. Her impeccable production treatments run the spectrum from house to ambient dark wave. Nuanced beats lay the foundations for Sydanie to unpack her lyrical fireworks; ranging from meditative to incendiary - a contagious momentum that results in seriously deep thrills for the listener.

Lucila Al Mar, singer-songwriter, has the amazing skill of being an introverted hermit by day and an audience captivating performer by night. This Brujas ability to move between genres, from the gnarly defiant energy of punk rock to the lushness of folk music to the soulful resonance of an acapella song, all within the same performance will have you asking yourself “wtf hit me?!”. Her performances welcome you into the precious space of her life; they welcome you to revel in the many ways human presence can be shared, and the multitude of ways music can beautify our experience of life, death and ultimately, bring us together.

Kimberly Sunstrum + Kira Montfort
Kimberly Sunstrum is a heart-stopping performer. Her song writing is deep, evocative, and powerful and her music delightfully impossible to pin down. It’s an inspired blend of the grooves she listened to growing up in Sub-Saharan Africa and Canada. She strings together sounds from South African pop hits, classic R&B, old-time country and 70’s Motown power bops and spins them all in to her own unique melodies.
She writes about the world as she sees it with a powerful poetry and grace. Mixed-race identity, feminism, love, family, and queerness are reflections of her life and constant themes in her songs.
Accompanied by Kira Montfort, one of the most versatile and hard-working drummers in Ottawa, Kira and Kimberly are the founding members of Ottawa acoustic soul group, Sunstrum + The Wilds. Montfort and Sunstrum are set to put on an enigmatic and passionate duo performance at the 2019 DIY Spring Festival.

Kosisochukwu Nnebe / Coloured Conversations
Kosisochukwu Nnebe is a Nigerian-Canadian visual artist. Using phenomenology (the study of experience) as a methodology, her practice aims to engage viewers on issues of race, gender and power in ways that make them aware of their own complicity through interactive and installation-based pieces. Her work has been exhibited at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Places des Arts, Station 16 and Z Art Space in Montreal, Studio Sixty Six in Ottawa, the NIA Centre in Toronto, the Art Gallery of Guelph, and the Mohr Gallery in Mountain View, California. She has given presentations on her artistic practice and research at universities across Quebec, including Laval, McGill and Concordia, and has facilitated youth workshops at the Ottawa Art Gallery and Redwood City High School in California. She is currently based in Ottawa.
