Girls+ Rock Ottawa presents a live show and percussion workshop with Pantayo, an all-women R&B gong punk collective hailing from Toronto. Combining percussive metallophones and drums from Kulintang traditions of Southern Philippines and synth-based electro grooves, they are an eclectic mix of modern and traditional.
Pantayo will present their kulintang workshop, KuliVersity. KuliVersity is an introduction to the history, contemporary practice, and performance of Kulintang. Participants will focus on learning the basics of Kulintang and the band will describe their exposure to Kulintang teachings and how their experiences as Diasporic Filipinas influence their music.
The events take place at General Assembly (5B Fairmont Ave). The percussion workshop will run from 7-8pm and the show will run from 8:30-10:30pm, with local favourites Scary Bear Soundtrack kicking off the show. Tickets for both events can be purchased here.
