National Arts Centre, 1 Elgin St.

At the vanguard of progressive world music, Toronto's Minor Empire takes the listener on a voyage of the imagination. As the shamanic focus of the band, vocalist and composer Ozgu Ozman reaches across the geography of her homeland, selecting techniques of expression from the vast vocabularies of the Balkan, Black Sea and other variegated Turkish cultures.

Variously described by reviewers as “trippy”, “dreamy”, “cinematic”, “stylishly hip” and “deeply exotic”, award winning Turkish Canadian group has racked up a lengthy list of plaudits for its seamless blend of traditional music and modern sounds.

Their debut recording, Second Nature, took the Canadian Folk Music Award for World Artist of the Year. Their latest release Uprooted was recently nominated for Independent Music Awards, and Canadian Folk Music Awards.
