In the 1960's and 70's, Indigenous artists from every corner of Turtle Island carved unique paths that extend into the present. Working in and outside of the music industry in the face of racism and apathy, these trailblazers worked with limited resources (many from remote locations) to share their creative expressions with their communities and the world at large.
In this afternoon session of sharing and storytelling moderated by Rosanna Deerchild (Host of CBC's Unreserved), we will hear from veteran artists featured on the 2014 Grammy-nominated compilation Native North America (Vol. 1): Aboriginal Folk, Rock and Country (1966-1985), including Willy Mitchell, Leland Bell, and Dr. Duke Redbird, as well as legendary filmmaker and singer Alanis Obomsawin.
Younger Indigenous artists Melody McKiver, Jeremy Dutcher, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, and Cody Coyote will also share their experiences in carrying storytelling traditions forward, and carving their own paths in the context of the modern music industry environment.
