Indivisible Ottawa is calling for all concerned about what’s happening in the US to gather outside the US Embassy in Ottawa for what is anticipated to be the largest global day of protest opposing Donald Trump’s authoritarianism to date. The speed with which the Trump administration has dismantled democratic pillars and disregarded constitutional rights has been shocking for all to see and is terrifying for those whose lives are being upended. Once a beacon of democracy, the United States has become a place where immigrants and citizens alike live in fear of being profiled and detained because of the colour of their skin, and foreigners are afraid to visit.

In June, millions of grassroots Indivisible groups around the globe gathered for the first “No Kings Day of Action” to say no to tyrants, no to dictators, no to oligarchs, and no to autocrats. President Trump’s military-style birthday parade was a complete flop, and instead the world was flooded with images of peaceful supporters championing democratic values. With Trump now violating the law and doubling down on authoritarianism by sending militarized troops into US cities, Canadians must join in solidarity with our American neighbours to reject the dictatorship he is trying to create. Join us to stand against the death of democracy.

Over 2500 events have been scheduled across the United States and internationally. Where these events will be held in countries with monarchies, the theme has become "No Tyrants," so as not to mix messages. In the spirit of political satire, and because Trump hates to be mocked, we encourage attendees to dress in costume, wear black/orange, and bring signs. The rally is expected to be creative, colourful, and strongly visual — ideal for press photography and video. Those who would like to attend an advance sign- and mask-making night on October 16 should email IndivisibleOttawa@proton.me for details.

No Tyrants will send a message that Canadians and Americans together are champions of democracy and that power belongs to the people. A core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolence. We seek to make this event safe and accessible for all, and expect all participants to act lawfully at events.
