SlutWalk Ottawa 2019
1:00 PM on Sunday Sep. 8th, 2019
Human Rights Memorial, Elgin St.

SlutWalk Ottawa is a movement of protest and march which aims to end rape culture and sexual violence. The goal of the march is to move towards eliminating a culture of victim-blaming and sex-shaming in our society, as well as to empower and inspire survivors. It raises awareness that no matter what someone is wearing, it is never the survivor's fault.

Join us on Sunday, September 8th, 2019 at 1pm for Slutwalk Ottawa. Meet us at the Human Rights Memorial (Elgin and Lisgar) where speeches will take place starting around 1pm. At 1:30pm we’ll be marching down Elgin towards Wellington, down Wellington past Parliament, on to Bank towards Somerset, and from Somerset ending off again at the Human Rights Memorial.

First, note that this event will take place on unceded, unsurrendered Algonquin territory.

We would also like to make it clear that Slut Walk does not tolerate racism, cissexism, heterosexism, ableism, colonialism or any other forms of oppression. We are striving to create an event that centers the experiences of marginalized communities, especially folks impacted by racism, anti-black racism, colonialism, and transmisogyny. This is reflected both in our diverse organizing and volunteer teams, the speakers and topics we're addressing during the event, and in our ongoing efforts to learn how to better create safer and anti-oppressive spaces. We acknowledge that this is a work in progress and we are by no means perfect. We welcome all feedback and criticism in how we're messing up. Please contact one of our organizers and we'd be happy to talk more about this.

ACCESSIBILITY:
Please help us support accessibility and inclusion. Active listeners (counsellors) will be available for anyone who may need them. They'll be spread throughout the crowd and visibly identified (we’ll let you know how closer to the day of). Just flag them down and ask to talk. We will have marshals that will be visible throughout the duration of the event if you need help as well. We ask that if you take a photo of someone you ask first. Please be aware that photos may be taken by media that might be published. To help make this event a safe[r] space, please use your best judgment about the space you physically take up. Do not touch others without their permission.
____________________________________________

Rape culture manifests itself in many forms, from victim blaming to slut-shaming to much more. We’re here to challenge the shaming and blaming of victims of sexual violence. We’re here to say that it is never the victim’s fault.

All are welcome to attend. We do not require any dress code. All we ask is that you support challenging and ending rape culture.

The Purple Sisters Youth Advisory Committee works to empower young women from all backgrounds, regardless of class, race, age, sexual and gender identity, religion and physical and mental ability.

We believe that women have the right to make their own choices that affect themselves, their lives, and their bodies.

We strive to challenge gender roles, create safe spaces, and value diversity.

We achieve these goals through event planning, offering workshops in the community, and our strong presence on social media. If you would like to invite us to deliver a workshop or be a part of your event please contact us and we would love to be there.
