Curated by Heather Anderson
From Jan. 18 until April 19, 2016
Part of an ongoing series by Vancouver artist Carol Sawyer, this
exhibition features photographs, texts, videos and music recitals that
reconstruct the life and work of Natalie Brettschneider, a Canadian
performance artist active in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. This
narrative is interwoven with references to CUAG’s founding patron,
Frances Barwick, whom Brettschneider may have met in Paris and
reconnected with in Ottawa. A playful and inventive inquiry into which
stories survive, and why and how, Brettschneider’s archive illuminates
the persistent gaps and omissions of official history and what role
photographs play in the telling.
