More music by and for Indigenous people in Canada and music for film by Kevin Hearn and music for dance by Fly Pan Am

Tonight we open the show with about 45 minutes of music created mostly by Indigenous artists to show solidarity with Indigenous communities who are struggling with the Canadian government and Roman Catholic Church to get information about residential schools and children who were murdered or died at these schools over many decades. This all comes following the stunning revelation that 215 bodies of children were found in unmarked graves on the grounds of a residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia. CBC's The Current featured interviews about the search for the truth about what happened at these schools on June 2 https://www.cbc.ca/radio/thecurrent/the-current-for-june-2-2021-1.6049839 We also feature the soundtrack to the documentary There Are No Fakes. The music is by Kevin Hearn (Barenaked Ladies) and he is featured in the film as it tells the story of his lawsuit against an art dealer for selling him a piece of art that was supposed to have been created by Indigenous visual artist Norval Morrisseau, whom Chagall once dubbed “The Picasso Of The North.' Hearn begins to doubt his painting’s authenticity, and sues the gallery that sold it to him. He suddenly finds himself in the middle of two darkly comical feuding factions: all white people, each claiming to be the true defenders of this Native artist’s legacy. At stake is the value of a tranche of 3000 Morrisseau paintings worth some $30,000,000. I hope to watch the movie this week. https://www.therearenofakes.com/ Then we feature a new recording by Montreal's Fly Pan Am. The album called Fontera, is an intensely evocative live score that Fly Pan Am developed in close collaboration with Dana Gingras and her Montréal-based dance troupe Animals Of Distinction. The music accompanied the dance presentation of the same name and was performed at the National Arts Centre here in Ottawa back in February of 2020... just before the world locked down. It's intense and engaging music. https://cstrecords.com/products/fly-pan-am-frontera Enjoy.
