"Farmer's Song" he wrote in the Palace Hotel, Elvale, Ont., 9 miles from Wasaga Beach. I heard him interviewed 100 yrs ago in Toronto & he told the story.... I went to high school in the village (910 people). & downed many a draft there...shuffleboard shark & worked as farmhand.... Palace had last Men's Room where you pissed against a tile wall into a shallow trough.... jus sayin'....

As a fan of Murray McLauchlan’s since the mid-70s, I loved this one-hour spotlight on his music! It features not only some of his more well-known numbers, but inspired covers, and rarities like two songs that Murray covered on Dancing Alone, a tribute album of William Hawkins. We heard songs with folk, country, rock, and pop influences. There were some great obscure tracks I had never heard before such as a funky saxophone instrumental of Farmer’s Song. l enjoyed the anecdotes and little known facts, including how Murray came to be the first to record Warren Zevon’s Carmelita, which was also played. My all-time favourite, Child’s Song was included as a sensitive cover by Tom Rush. And it was fun to hear Darlene Tuleta singing backup on a version of Farmer’s Song as very few women cover his music. There was a good selection of covers such as the poppy Coat of Many Colours by 3’s a Crowd, which I have never heard Murray sing, David Wiffen’s emotive You Need a New Lover Now, and Blackie and the Rodeo Kings with a lively Down at the Henry Moore. Another standout was the late Ron Hynes, with No Change in the Weather, a song co-written with Murray. Heck, there was even a clip of Murray’s CBC Radio show, Swinging on a Star, and a mention of Murray’s autobiography. Now I want to hear the version of Honky Red Ray referred to but did not play featuring David Wilcox!
