Black History Month, Marcus Mosely (The Sojourners), Aengus Finnan (Folk Alliance International)

We talk with Marcus Mosely, an amazing Vancouver-based singer and a member of The Sojourners. Marcus shares some of his music and talks about the online Black History Month events he has organized. We also chat with Aengus Finnan in Kansas City. He's the Executive Director of the massive Folk Alliance International organization -- the first Canadian to hold that position since in the organization's 32-year history. Aengus describes this year's 'Folk Unlocked' conference which will take place online from February 22nd to 26th. The conference includes a massive number of online performances that are open to the public -- for information, go to folk.org. Aengus talks about the support Folk Alliance International is providing to people in all roles within the folk/roots music community, and the organization's impressive work to create a higher level of inclusion and equity, both internally and externally.

Markus gave a workshop at a United church in Smiths fall, ON many years ago; our son attended and on his return to the house, he rapped on our door...when we opened it, he greeted us with a loud, deep bluesy phrase proclaiming how he'd found his basso-profundo voice!

What a lovely memory, Judy. His voice and his positive energy are amazing aren't they?

So wonderful to hear Yusuf's returning to bring us a wonderful revisiting of "Where Do the Children Play?", a half-century after the release of the song. His voice retains its subtlety and power, and the lyrics still ring true. For those who heard this version and liked it, I can assure you that the entirety of the album is worthwhile.

This is impressive CKCU. A very thoughtful set of programming to intelligently mark Black History Month. Great music interspersed with good words. Makes me even more proud to donate each year.
