2nd set at 8pm:
TURBOPROP is:
Tara Davidson - Alto Sax
Kelly Jefferson - Tenor Sax
William Carn - Trombone
Adrean Farrugia - Piano
Michael Herring - Bass
Ernesto Cervini - Drums
TURBOPROP
Innovative and electrifying, Toronto jazz drummer Ernesto Cervini has energy to
burn, whether radiating it from behind his kit or working on any number of musical
and educational projects. With his sextet Turboprop Cervini flexes his arranging
muscles, creating a vast landscape of musical textures, and moods on which these
monster musicians can play.
The band features many of Canada’s finest and most in-demand musicians; Tara
Davidson on Alto Saxophone, Kelly Jefferson on Tenor Saxophone, William Carn on
Trombone, Adrean Farrugia on Piano, Michael Herring on Bass and Cervini on
Drums.
The band's sound is reminiscent to the hard swinging Jazz Messenger bands of Art
Blakey, although they tackle a wide range of music; from Charlie Parker to Claude
Debussy to Radiohead, plus originals from all the band members. They have
already toured across Canada multiple times to rave reviews, and released their
JUNO-award winning third album, Abundance, on ANZIC Records (NYC) in the fall of
2018.
MUDITA
Comprised of guitarist Roddy Elllias and Petr Cancura on woodwinds, Mudiat explores crossing boundaries between jazz, improv and worldly folk melodies. These world class musicians have been on a musical journey of creating authentic, transcendent music, with an almost telepathic connection. Reminiscent of ECM recordings, Mudita seeks to create sonic warmth and memorable melodies in the hands of two master musicians.
Roddy Ellias - His music has been described as “unapologetically beautiful” (All About Jazz) and his creativity “both startling and inspiring” (Just Jazz Guitar). A passionate improviser and prolific composer, Canadian guitarist Roddy Ellias is an artist whose work defies simple definition. His musical journey has taken him from his early roots in pop and R&B bands and classical music, to the improvised world of jazz, through African and other world beats all the way to writing an opera, and everything in between. Along the way he’s performed with some of the great names in music, from Cleo Laine, Michel Legrand, the Montreal Symphony, the NAC Orchestra, Lee Konitz and David Liebman to Joel Frahm and Dr. Lonny Johnston and many more.
Petr Cancura - Petr Cancura’s aesthetic blends roots music and jazz to create an authentic, fresh and raw sound. Petr’s Down Home was nominated for the 2015 Best Instrumental Album JUNO, and awarded the Independent Music Award for Best Instrumental Album of the Year. Petr’s most recent album releases include a roots-inspired quartet record on vinyl featuring Kenny Wollesen and Tony Scherr, a cinema/avante-garde induced quartet record featuring Jesse Zubot, Gordon Grdina and Jean Martin and a trio recording featuring the great Charlie Hunter and Geoff Clapp recorded in North Carolina and an early rock and roll inspired trio recording with Charlie Hunter and George Sluppick. Petr has played with everyone from Aretha Franklin, to Danilo Perez and Julian Lage amongst many more.

Augustin Hadelich, violin & Orion Weiss, piano
@Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre
Event:
https://fb.me/e/3VGAqLSGC

The 2023-24 Concert Series opens with a spectacular recital from Grammy award-winning violinist Augustin Hadelich and pianist Orion Weiss, featuring Beethoven’s lyrical Sonata No. 10 and Prokofiev’s haunting Violin Sonata No. 1. The programme also features John Adams’ Road Movies, described as a “joyful romp,” and the reverie of Amy Beach’s “Romance, Op. 23.”
Hadelich has performed with every major orchestra in the US, many on numerous occasions, as well as an ever-growing number of major orchestras in the UK, Europe, and Asia, “The essence of Hadelich’s playing is beauty: reveling in the myriad ways of making a phrase come alive on the violin, delivering the musical message with no technical impediments whatsoever, and thereby revealing something from a planet beyond ours” (The Washington Post). Hadelich’s appearances as a soloist include guest engagements with the most celebrated ensembles in the world, including the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Berlin Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, NHK Symphony Orchestra (Tokyo), Oslo Philharmonic, and Philadelphia Orchestra, among others.
One of the most sought-after soloists and chamber music collaborators of his generation, Orion Weiss is widely regarded as a “brilliant pianist” (The New York Times) with “powerful technique and exceptional insight” (The Washington Post). With a warmth to his playing that outwardly reflects his engaging personality, Weiss has dazzled audiences with his passionate, lush sound and performed with dozens of orchestras in North America, including the Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and New York Philharmonic.
____
