Friday Drive
Friday July 7th, 2023 with Trevor Walker
[83’TilInfinityCFM40thWarmUp]

Happy Friday Drivers! Diving deep into memory lane with selections of the soundtrack from my youth on this week’s episode. Hip Hop’s 50th year and the 40th anniversary of my breakdancing crew crept up and helped me reflect on the musical influences that have brought me to this day. The catalyst is the opening of OAG’s “83 ’Til Infinity” exhibit, a historical retrospective of Hip Hop’s influence on Ottawa’s community happening this Saturday in conjunction with The Canadian Floor Masters’ 40th year celebration, I’ve been digging deep in my dusty crates to unearth a soundtrack worth sharing with you all! You can expect a nice mix of classic Hip Hop, Electro, Boogie, Freestyle & Soul over the next couple hours. I have to give a massive shout out to CKCU, Elorious Cain’s the Groove for introducing me to so much of the music that would become the soundtrack of those magical years. Thank you for taking the time to be here, happy listening and I hope you enjoy the show.

Canadian Floor Masters 40th birthday & “Cypher North”!
City Battles, MC Tributes, historical videos wrapped in an old school vibe dance party!

Welcome to 83 ‘til infinity, where we see, hear, and move with stories and experiences of hip-hop in the Ottawa–Gatineau region that flow from decades-long conversations about the craft and values of hip-hop's five pillars: breaking, emceeing, DJ-ing, graffiti, and knowledge.
We celebrate the creativity, innovation, knowledge, and traditions that make up hip-hop. The materials we were lent show how the values of hip-hop are built on culture, community, activism, and justice.
We begin with the Canadian Floor Masters (CFM), formed in 1983. From there, the show moves on to highlight events, artists, and songs that continue to shape culture and community.
Nothing in this exhibition would be possible without the people who make hip-hop happen here, including those who are no longer with us. We honour those who came before, those we’ve lost, and those who are still to come, as we look together towards the future.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Prodigious Tuareg guitarist and songwriter Mdou Moctar boldly reforges contemporary Saharan music and “rock music“ by melding Eddie Van Halen pyrotechnics, full-blast noise and guitar shredding, field recordings, drums rhythms, poetic meditations on love, religion, women’s rights, inequality and Western Africa’s exploitation at the hands of colonial powers to rip a new hole in the sky with the Afrique Victime album.

Siaka Diabate is a musician from Burkina Faso. His main instrument is the Kora, a West African harp, which he also made himself. His songs are mainly in Djoula, one of the main languages of Burkina Faso, and he loves singing about the most important thing in the world - love. Together with his group in Ottawa they combine traditional music with modern rhythms and rock the stage! Kora music is beautiful, sometimes calm and perfect for relaxing and sometimes full of energy for dancing!

On the heel of his breakthrough 2022 hit “B.O.T.A. Over time Interplanetary Criminal has cultivated his UK Garage sound, turning heads in even the furthest corners of the globe with releases on seminal record labels such as Shall Not Fade, Kiwi Records, Locked On Records, & Constant Sound. Last year, the renown producer and DJ scored a UK number-one with one of the year's most inescapable tunes B.O.T.A. (Baddest Of Them All). Elsewhere, Interplanetary Criminal's place within UK Garage has been highlighted, describing him as “helping to further the resurgence of a genre that carries the weight of the UK on its back” (Mixmag, 2022).

On stage, The Bongo Hop is the equivalent of a tropical storm served with hot brass, infectious Afro grooves, electric sounds, and heavenly vocals. His first album, Satingarona pt.1, was acclaimed as a remarkable genre-bending achievement. Meanwhile, their second album Satingarona pt.2 is also earning success. In preparation for the recording of a third album, The Bongo Hop earlier this year released "La Ñapa" a mini album with remixes, bonus tracks and some new songs.

Nidia Góngora is a singer/songwriter from the remote river village of Timbiquí, an Afro-Colombian community, whose location and cultural contrasts provide endless inspiration. Now based in Cali, she is considered one of the foremost artists of the typical marimba music of the South Pacific region, a guardian of the oral tradition and was awarded the title of ‘Afro-Colombian of the Year’ by Color de Colombia and El Espactador. Fronting leading regional outfits including Grupo Canalon and Canalón de Timbiquí (who were nominated in the Latin Grammy Awards for Best Folk Album), Góngora inspires many from the region with her techniques and work.

House of Paint / HoP, Canada's longest running Urban Arts Festival, is back for it's 20th year and our very own co-founder Arnaldo "Effect" is the Dance Coordinator! So you know the battles are going to be fire!
-------------------------------------------------
About:
"The House of PainT Festival is a FREE Outdoor HipHop Jam that showcases Graffiti, Breakdancing, Dj’s and MC’s from across Canada. It is one of Ottawa’s fastest growing community events. Since 2003, House of Paint has created space to exhibit and uplift hip hop culture in the Nation’s Capital.
House of PainT’s pillars are the elements of hip hop: Graffiti, DJ-ing, MC-ing (Poetry and Rap), and Street Dance are celebrated and elevated through concerts, competitions, workshops, and academic talks for all ages.
As an organization, House of PainT celebrates and elevates hip hop arts and culture in the Ottawa-Gatineau region by promoting artists practicing hip hop art forms, improving access to urban arts for people from all different communities, connecting artists with opportunities for professional development, and of course facilitating the creation and presentation of hip hop arts through the Festival and our other programs throughout the year."
