The Guest List
Thursday June 8th, 2023 with Joe Reilly
An interview with Joe Therriault of Gulfer and with Mick Kern of The Ring Shepherds

We open the show today in conversation with Joe Therriault who plays guitar and sings with the Montreal-based rock band Gulfer. Gulfer is coming to Ottawa to perform at the Rainbow on Saturday, June 17th so you have plenty of time to plan to attend the group's show. We talk to Joe about the sound of Gulfer and specifically about the intricate guitar sounds at the heart of the mix. We talk about the "emo" label and about the opaque nature of the group's lyrics. Joe also explains how the 2020 self-titled album Gulfer was a major transition for the group and how a new album coming later this year will highlight further evolution in the group's sound. For tickets to see Gulfer check out this link: https://www.ticketweb.ca/event/gulfer-valleyheart-guest-room-status-rainbow-bistro-tickets/13149208?pl=spectrasonic For more information about Gulfer use this link: https://www.topshelfrecords.com/roster/gulfer https://gulfer.bandcamp.com/album/greetings-barely We also feature parts of an extensive interview with Mick Kern of The Ring Shepherds. Mick was an announcer/host here on CKCU back in the 1980s and he was part of the Ottawa music scene recording and performing with The Randypeters, The Town Cryers and Porcelain Owl before moving to Toronto in the 90s. Mick is a broadcaster in Toronto and he has performed and recorded with other artists. During the pandemic he started making his own music in his apartment studio during the lockdowns. He released his debut as The Ring Shepherds back in 2021 and his sophomore album, The Rage of Uncertainty, is a fresh release. The Ring Shepherds are not coming to town to perform but every now and then we drop in some excerpts from an extensive interview I did with him a couple of months ago. Today we talk to Mick about the themes and musical ideas in the songs we feature today. It's always a blast to talk to Mick about music so enjoy. Here is where you can check out more music by Mick's Ring Shepherds on the Bandcamp website: https://theringshepherds.bandcamp.com Thanks for listening today. Get out and see some live music if you can and support independent music in any way that you can. Take care.
