Glen, we think it was a hammered dulcimer that he was playing on that song.

Glen
Ah yes! Definitely sounds like a dulcimer.

Glen: Must get. Even just shortish parts are just... It's a solo thing, recorded on the road when, having learned of his impending death, he went on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage (see wiki); he recorded himself playing in various churches. The sustains are amazing, because... A haunting recording (I have the cd).

You all should look up O Holy Night en français. It's not unreligious in English, but the French original (I think) is called *Minuit Chrétien*. It goes on to be very religious, with old articles of faith being mentioned. kneeling, etc. Here (contains weird words): https://www.paroles.net/chants-de-noel/paroles-minuit-chretien

Wiki to the rescue! "The "Huron Carol" (or "Twas in the Moon of Wintertime") is a Canadian Christmas hymn (Canada's oldest Christmas song), written probably in 1642 by Jean de Brébeuf, a Jesuit missionary at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons in Canada.[1] Brébeuf wrote the lyrics in the native language of the Huron/Wendat people; the song's original Huron title is "Jesous Ahatonhia" ("Jesus, he is born"). The song's melody is based on a traditional French folk song, "Une Jeune Pucelle" ("A Young Maid"). The well-known English lyrics were written in 1926 by Jesse Edgar Middleton and the copyright to these lyrics was held by The Frederick Harris Music Co., Limited, but entered the public domain in 2011.
