Roque Dalton, one of the greatest Latin American poets, was born on May 14, 1935 in San Salvador, El Salvador. He was shot and killed on Mothers Day, May 10, 1975.
The spirit of Roque Dalton, along with his works, has lived on and inspired countless people. In May 2013, El Salvador’s government declared May 14 the National Poetry Day in honour of Roque Dalton’s birthday.
His legacy is his poetry, which ranges from anger at capitalist oppression and the struggle for a better world, to the most tender love ballads.
Dalton has long been recognized as one of the finest poets of the 20th century in Latin America, and the government's recognition of him validates his importance. Dalton was not just a poet; he was a revolutionary.
