Canadian Government Apology - Military anti-Black racism in WWI
Join me for my interview with CKCU DJ Chris White. His family, are descendants of William Andrew III, who served in the World War 1, No.2 Construction Battalion. The descendants of those soldiers, received an apology from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Minister of Defense Anita Anand on behalf of the Canadian Government for Systemic anti-Black racism treatment of African Canadians, who attempted to enlist, and those who did enlist, in the Canadian Armed forces during the First World War. These enlistees endured racism before, during and after the war. Even their existence was omitted from History books. We talk about what actions are associated with the apology. We're also treated to a song that Chris White was inspired to write in honor of his grandfather William Andrew White III, who served in the battalion. I also include music from Buffy St. Marie, Marvin Gaye and a song off of my album Bridging Borders.
