Stranger Songs
Tuesday May 2nd, 2023 with Mike Regenstreif
Stompin' at the Savoy

The theme on this edition of Stranger Songs is “Stompin’ at the Savoy.” The Savoy Ballroom in the Harlem section of New York City was a major music venue from 1926 until 1958, and in the liner notes to “Savoy” by Taj Mahal, Holger Peterson notes that 13 of the 14 songs on the album would likely have been heard at the Savoy during its long run. And that’s what gave me the idea for this theme. All the songs on this show were performed during that period and might well have been heard at the Savoy at some point. At the end of this show I mention that "Mothers" will be the theme on the next edition of Stranger Songs. That theme will be delayed until sometime in the future. On the next Stranger Songs we'll remember Harry Belafonte, who died on April 25 at age 96. The following week, we'll remember Gordon Lightfoot, who died on May 1 at age 84.

Good music today, Mike. Will be eager to hear your tribute to Gordon Lightfoot. A musician both of us know, Brendan Nolan, reminds me a bit of G.L. in his tones and storytelling.
