The theme for this edition of Stranger Songs is "Songs of Woody Guthrie, Part 1 – Classic Songs."
Woody Guthrie – whose active career as a folksinger, songwriter and author was relatively brief, from the late-1930s until the early-1950s – was the most important folk-rooted songwriter of the first half of the 20th century and an inspiration to subsequent generations of folksingers and songwriters who have followed.
Next week’s show – Songs of Woody Guthrie, Part 2: “New” Songs from the Archives – will feature songs from the Woody Guthrie Archives that have been set to music by various contemporary artists.
