“Touched Fables: Echoes and the Poetry of Survival – A Movember Journey”

I’m proud to share a new chapter of “Mapped Out Radio” on CKCU 93.1 FM — a station that has been the heartbeat of independent voices in Ottawa for 50 years. Half a century of stories, music, community, and resilience… and it’s an honour to continue contributing to that legacy. For this special Movember edition, I’m co-hosting with the amazing Sarah Monica as we take a deep dive into my personal journey of surviving cancer — the fear, the fight, the hope, and the strength that carried me through. Revisiting those memories wasn’t easy, but it felt meaningful… because sharing our stories can heal, inspire, and remind us that we’re never alone. We’re also honoured to have my friend Patricia join us to share a beautiful and powerful poem about her own journey and surviving cancer. Her words bring courage, honesty, and light to this episode, and I’m grateful she’s lending her voice to this moment. We continue with an exclusive conversation with Paul Anthony of Touched Fables about their powerful sophomore album, “The Sum of All Wounds.” A raw and emotional project that beautifully aligns with the spirit of this episode. This week is also our CKCU Fund Drive — a moment where every dollar truly counts. Your support helps keep our radio vibrant, independent, and uncensored. If you believe in community voices, real stories, and music without boundaries, please consider donating. Malek, your story was so close to mine in so many ways that touched me deeply and had tears throughout the whole interview… they were not sad tears, they were tears of deep emotion to see how our positive mindset and resilience were at play in our survival! Let’s celebrate Life every day! Patricia, the Gladiatrix.

I wanted to share how deeply your segment on cancer affected me. Hearing those stories felt especially powerful, as someone who has personally faced cancer myself. It brought back memories, but also a sense of connection — a reminder that none of us walk this journey alone. The song “Cancer” was stunning in its honesty. It captured emotions that are hard to say out loud — fear, resilience, hope — all in one moment. It stayed with me long after the broadcast ended. Thank you for creating a space where difficult truths can be spoken with compassion. What you’re doing matters more than you know.
