A.F.A.R.
Wednesday June 26th, 2024 with Carolyn, host of Always for Animal Rights
This week, long-time animal liberation advocates Roger Yates and Ronnie Lee discuss the need for more autonomous, grassroots vegan education initiatives in local communities worldwide.

On the show this week, we’ll be listening to another episode of Roger Yates and Ronnie Lee’s online talk show, Still Alive!. Ronnie Lee and Roger Yates have been vegans since the 1970’s, and both were formerly involved with the Press Office of the Animal Liberation Front. Nowadays, Roger Yates is a vegan sociologist and animal rights advocate based in Ireland, while Ronnie Lee organizes vegan education initiatives in the UK. In this episode, Roger and Ronnie discuss the need for advocates to organize autonomous, grassroots vegan outreach groups in their communities worldwide. The title of the episode, “Autonomous for the Voiceless”, is a play on the name of an animal advocacy group called Anonymous for the Voiceless, also known as AV. Please note that when Roger and Ronnie use the terms “sabs” and “sabbing”, they are referring to the hunt saboteurs, who work to directly prevent hunters from killing our fellow animals in the countryside, mostly in Britain. We’ll have time to listen to an abridged version of this discussion today. Partway through the discussion, Roger reads aloud a short comment from someone who tuned in to the live stream. I believe it’s preferable to do vegan outreach that is creative and non-hierarchical, and that allows advocates to evolve their approaches over time. At its best, vegan education promotes a holistic approach to social justice and calls for the abolition of all animal use. Veganism means peace for all sentient beings, nonhuman and human.
