In this interview from 2013, the vegan sociologist David Nibert discusses the entanglements between the oppression of humans and the oppression of our fellow animals, focusing particularly on the colonization and exploitation of Latin America.

This week, we’ll be listening to an excerpt from an interview that was originally recorded in 2013 for the On Human-Nonhuman Relations Podcast, hosted by the vegan sociologist Roger Yates. In this interview, another vegan sociologist, David Nibert, spoke to Roger about how oppressive social arrangements are established and maintained in society, elaborating on the historical and present-day entanglements between the oppression of humans and the oppression of our fellow animals. David Nibert is a human rights and animal rights activist and a professor at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. This interview was recorded shortly after the publication of one of David’s books, Animal Oppression and Human Violence: Domesecration, Capitalism, and Global Conflict, in 2013. While this interview focuses on some of the harmful effects of domestication, or domesecration, on the course of human history, David has also written about how the advent of organized hunting in human societies led to the beginnings of sexism and social stratification. Living vegan means that we respect animal rights and human rights, and we oppose all forms of animal use. To learn more about these topics, I recommend David Nibert’s 2013 book, Animal Oppression and Human Violence: Domesecration, Capitalism, and Global Conflict.
