In this 2017 talk by vegan sociologist Roger Yates, Roger highlights the distinction between animal rights and animal welfare, and he encourages us to take the time to read and educate ourselves so that theory can inform our activism.

This week, we’ll be listening to a talk that was given in 2017 by the vegan sociologist and long-time activist Roger Yates, who has been a guest on my show several times so far. Roger’s 2005 PhD dissertation focused on the social construction of speciesism. In the 1980's, he was a Press Officer for the Animal Liberation Front, and he is currently the organizing volunteer for the Vegan Information Project, a group which he co-founded in Ireland in 2013. He also has a blog, social media, and YouTube channel, where he advocates for veganism and animal rights from an abolitionist perspective. In this talk, Roger highlights the distinction between animal rights and animal welfare, and he encourages us to take the time to read and educate ourselves so that theory can better inform our activism. Please note that when Roger mentions Gary Francione and Joan Dunayer, he’s referring to the professor of philosophy and law, Gary Francione, who authored and co-authored a number of important books about animal rights and abolitionist veganism; and the author and theorist Joan Dunayer, who wrote two important books about speciesism, animal rights, and language.
