Vegan scholar Yamini Narayanan describes how her work in feminist urban planning led her to start learning about the experiences of nonhuman animals in Indian cities; professor Tom Regan explains the philosophy of animal rights; plus, some music!

In a few weeks from now, I’ll be interviewing the Critical Animal Studies scholar Yamini Narayanan on the show to discuss her 2023 book, Mother Cow, Mother India, which offers a critical vegan analysis of the politics of cow protectionism in India. Yamini is an Associate Professor of International and Community Development at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia. On air this week, I’d like to share a short clip of Yamini speaking on The Animal Turn podcast with interviewer and scholar Claudia Hirtenfelder in 2021. In this clip, Yamini describes how her involvement in feminist urban planning led her to begin to become aware of the experiences of other-than-human animals in Indian cities. Afterwards, we’ll hear a brief explanation of the philosophy of animal rights by Professor Tom Regan. In this audio clip, which was recorded at a public debate in 1989, Tom describes the philosophy of animal rights. Tom Regan was the author of the groundbreaking 1983 book, The Case for Animal Rights. Throughout the episode, we'll also hear some songs by vegan musicians!
