A Whole Old World: Circle of Circles of Life (Elephant)
In a spooky, Spocky start to October, the Joshes focus on three rough diamonds in the rough rough: Disney’s remakes so far this year.
First up is Dumbo (2019), Tim Burton’s relative story departure that might just be his best film since Big Fish. Besides clinging to some old Dumbo visuals holding it back on occasion, they enjoy a lot of fresh characters and unrelenting sadness.
They can also agree that Aladdin (2019) is interesting, and perhaps greenlit by a drunk person. They shout out Will Smith and Naomi Scott’s performances, indifferently mention hot and boring Jafar, and lament Guy Ritchie’s lack of grit and toughness in his approach here.
Lastly, they quickly delve into Jon Favreau’s smash hit The Lion King (2019), a movie that’s pretty boring if you deploy the Joshes’ Circle of Life theory, and perhaps worse if you don’t. They mention inexpressive faces, missing eyebrows, Janney-esque brawls, and gratitude for Billy Eichner.
They also build a little hype for this week’s Gemini Man (2019).
