I'm Talking Here!
Monday July 1st, 2019 with Joshua Robert Bateman and Josh Murray
Guy Maddin and Canadian Cinema

Happy Canada Day to one and all! This week, the Joshes dig into the films of Guy Maddin. Josh M. saw Brand Upon the Brain! (2006), involving parents trying to harvest youth from orphans, and Josh B. saw The Green Fog (2017), a remake of Vertigo, or is it? There is also a brief mention of his shorts The Heart of the World (2000) and Night Mayor (2009), and a shout-out to Pedro Almodovar's Bad Education (2004). But the bulk of their time is spent on Maddin's most celebrated work My Winnipeg (2007), which prompts a discussion of how it feels to live in a fairly big Canadian city, and adulation for Maddin's skill at recreating silent film techniques. Lastly, we shout some Canadian faves: Act of the Heart (1970) and The Sweet Hereafter (1997). Next week: Midsommar, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Fantasia Festival.
