Lesson Hear
Thursday April 6th, 2017 with Retro Renny
Variety is the spice of life. Expect Afrobeat, blues, experimental music, folk, funk, proto-rap, punk rock, rockabilly, rock & roll, spoken word and Japanese fusion. CKCU: Breaking down musical barriers since 1975.

Trying to fit in as many styles of music into an hour while still maintaining a flow to the show.
I'm not the best for making my 35% Canadian content requirement. As an attempt to remedy this short coming, the first two sets of Lesson Hear are of all Canadian music.
Oh Canada (hidden track)
HUEVOS RANCHEROS - Dig In! - 1995, Mint Records Canadian
An instrumental band from Calgary, Huevos Rancheros were formed in 1990 and disbanded in 2000. This version of the national anthem is a hidden track on Dig In!, their second album and first release on Mint Records.
Have Not Been The Same
SLOW - Against The Glass - 1985, Zulu Records Canadian
Slow are infamous for their performance at the Festival Of Independent Recording Artists that was held during Expo 86 in Vancouver. The lead singer performed in his underwear (with his fly open) and the bassist dropped his pants at the end of their set. There was nearly a riot and the entire festival was cancelled. The band broke up after a cross Canada tour in 1987.
Workin' For A Living (Just Don't Work)
THE NATIONALS - Just West Of Something Big: A CFRU-FM Compilation - 1987, No's To No's Records Canadian
The Nationals were a blues trio from the Guelph area. This live track was released on a compilation album released by CFRU-FM, Guelph's community radio station.
Shakin' All Over
CHAD ALLAN & THE EXPRESSIONS/THE GUESS WHO? - The Guess Who? Super Golden Goodies - 1965/'69, Quality Records Canadian
Shakin' All Over is a cover version of Johnny Kidd & The Pirates' song from 1960. This version was recorded by the Winnipeg group Chad Allan & The Expressions in 1965. The bands label, Quality Records, put out the single with the question Guess Who? printed on the label, hoping that the mystery would increase the record's sales. A few month later the label revealed the actual group that recorded the single but by that time the radio deejays were crediting the single to the Guess Who and the rest is history.
Tossin' And Turnin'
CHAD ALLAN & THE EXPRESSIONS/THE GUESS WHO? - The Guess Who? Super Golden Goodies - '69, Quality Records Canadian
Tossin' And Turnin' was the B-Side to Shakin' All Over.
Breton Andro
NA CABARFEIDH - Stick It In Your Ear - 1981, Sometimes We Do This Musical Productions Canadian
Stick It In Your Ear was the first album by Na Cabarfeidh. The group combined traditional bag pipe playing with a folk/jazz guitar. After the release of their second album, Rare Air, the band changed it's name to Rare Air. Grier Coppins of Taxi Chain was one of the founding members of Na Cabarfeidh.
Push Button Boogie
RAY CONDO & HIS HARDROCK GONERS - Hillbilly Holiday - 1993, Fury Records Canadian
As far as I'm concerned Ray Condo should be put on a stamp, the man was a Canadian treasure. He was an amazing interpreter of older rockabilly, blues and western swing songs. Hillbilly Holiday was released on the British rockabilly label Fury Records.
To round off today's show we'll take a musical trip around the world and get you in the mood for The David Dalle Show, which is up next. Stay tuned or check it out online.
Love Part One
DEXYS MIDNIGHT RUNNERS - Searching For The Young Soul Rebels - 1980, EMI Records
Love Part One is a poem by Kevin Rowland, lead singer of Dexys Midnight Runners. In the early Eighties Dexys were the torch bearers of England's Northern soul movement.
Kalakuta Show
FELA KUTI - King Of Afrobeat - 1976/'99 Barkley Records
Fela Kuti was a musical innovator and political activist in Nigeria. Through his songs he criticized the Nigerian government, the army, multi-national corporations, the IMF and more. He was jailed, his mother was thrown out a window to her death by the army and yet he continued to record and perform. He called the African jazz/funk fusion he played Afrobeat. He died of AIDS in 1997.
Do The Sissy
ALBERT COLLINS - The Complete Imperial Recordings - 1969, Imperial Records/1991, EMI Records
Albert Collins was known as the Ice Man and "The Master Of The Telecaster" for his hot blues guitar playing. This instrumental recording from 1969 feels postitively funky. I assume that "The Sissy" was a dance at the time.
Doriella Du Fontaine
JIMI HENDRIX & LIGHTNIN' ROD - Doriella Du Fontaine (12" single) - 1969, Douglas Records/1984, Celluloid Records
Lightnin' Rod was the psuedonym for Jalal Mansur Nuriddin who was one of the founding members of the important black poetry group, The Last Poets.
Hendrix recorded the instrumental track with Buddy Miles in late 1969 and Nuriddin wrote lyrics to it in 1984. Nuriddim is known as "The Grandfather of Rap" for his Lightnin' Rod album, Hustlers Convention, that was released in 1973.
Benzaiten - God Of Music And Water
OSAMU KITAJIMA - Benzaiten - 1976, Antilles Records
As a child Osamu Kitajima was trained in classical guitar and piano. In the Sixties he joined his cousin's highly popular pop group, The Launchers as their guitar player. He move to London in 1971 and was influenced by the music of the Beatles, T. Rex and Syd Barrett. He released an album of songs recorded in English under the alias of Justin Heathcliff. He studied traditional Japanese music and composed Benzaiten in 1974 as a fusion between Eastern and Western music.

Hey Retro Renny, just joining in, and can't stay long due to stupid errands. BUT, thanks again for the extensive "liner notes" for the show. I know this take lots of work to put together. Much fun to be had later via OnDemand!

Thanks PeterB. I find that doing the research for the shows is half the fun of doing a show.
