Cluster

Tonight it's music from Cluster, the duo of Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius.
We begin with some true space exploration music, with the first two most "experimental" releases of the group (shortly after the breakup of Kluster and separation from founding Tangerine Dream member Conrad Schnitzler). On the first album they are joined by Conny Plank as a musician. He would remain involved with the group throughout their history.

Moebius and Roedelius hooked up with Michael Rother of Neu! in 1973 and they recorded two studio albums together (plus the inevitable archival releases decades later). Music from both studio albums are included in the next block, as well as material from the Live 1974 release, which is exactly what you would think it is. Also in 1974, Rother rejoined Neu! to complete his contractual obligations, which freed up Moebius and Roedelius to make another Cluster album, inspired by their work with Harmonia. All of this material features a marriage between Cluster's electronics and the motorik beat, with an increased presence of melody.

Around the time the association with Rother was rapping up, one with Brian Eno was just beginning. The four of them did some recordings together in 1976 that were eventually released as Harmonia's "Tracks and Traces". There were then two trio albums, one by "Cluster & Eno" and the second by "Eno Moebius Roedelius". The music becomes more gentle and atmospheric. Some of the Eno/Moebius/Roedelius material features vocals and we see Eno gradually crossing over from the art pop world to his more ambient work.

Now for a few artists I wasn't able to get around to during funding drive. Thank you to everyone who supported the station in this year's drive. The show had its best year yet, which I greatly appreciate. We'll start off with some space rock, get a bit more experimental, and wrap up with a nice atmospheric track by a project that is new to the show. Please enjoy a set of music that you won't hear anywhere but CKCU!
