Today its June 20th, a day before the start of Summer. And what makes this season so special is the playing of live jazz, outdoors and in parks, before appreciative audiences. Of course, you probably know already that this year’s Ottawa Jazz Festival (OJF), set to begin on June 23, is really the pop, rock, country and fusion festival. Jazz has been relegated to a sideshow at the NAC studio. And while the jazz acts are truly world class, the confines of the studio will limit seating to 300 lucky individuals. This is an insult to the thousands of loyal jazz fans who have supported the OJF for decades. So as a consolation to the many jazz fans who will be missing this year’s festival, today’s edition of Approaching Standards is a celebration of some exceptional live jazz performances.
