Following a hiatus in the mid 60's, she returned to the stage at age 45 and her career blossomed. With a wonderful contralto voice and a style featuring the use of silence, complex harmonies, distinct phrasing, and the ability to sing at a glacial pace, she is honoured as one of the great song stylists of jazz. Together with Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, and Sarah Vaughn, Shirley Horn is recognized as a member of the great quartet of jazz divas.
