Interview with members of the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY)

HIPPY, which stands for Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters, is a FREE program, offered in English or French and the objective is to help parents prepare their children for school, on the basis that they are their children's first and best educators! HIPPY is an international program, currently operational in 8 countries around the world. Its national office is located in Vancouver, BC and the program runs in 4 Canadian provinces. HIPPY-Ottawa is partly funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, and has been offered by the Vanier Community Service Centre since December 2008; now it’s also available in Ottawa-South in partnership with Andrew Fleck Child Care services. HIPPY is offered to families with kids 3,4 and 5 years old, and have a desire to make a positive change in their home and prepare their young child for school, and priority is given to low income and newcomer families. Home visitors will meet with the participating parent once a week and during 30 weeks throughout the school year to explain the activities.
