I had the good fortune of hearing Arcade Fire perform all of *Funeral* at the Black Sheep Inn that year. It was insanely great. They played the album through and then, as an encore, replayed -- was it? -- Neighbourhood # 3 maybe. One of them anyway. I still owe Paul Symes for pointing out the show -- without naming the band -- months in advance, and probably reminding me 2-3 times beforehand.

Cheers Doug. Don't know if he was big in Ottawa/Gatineau thing, but Shawn Phillips' LPs can be found pretty much anywhere you find a row of records at a yard sale or a thrift stores.

Shawn is big around here. Saw him a few times at the Black Sheep. Always sold out. Always get a good reaction when I play him.

I got my tickets a couple weeks ago. Keep checking with the box office as sometimes people can't make it or they add a couple extra tickets.

Steve Kirkland: Yes, Shawn Phillips WAS known in Ottawa: I heard him more than a couple of times at Le Monde Coffee House, in the basement of that Saint Peter and Saint Paul Church, on O'Connor at Gloucester. Red brick place. Earlyish-mid 60s. Le Monde used to be the 'affordable' coffee house (with music), whereas the Sussex St. Hibou was the rich person's coffeehouse (with music). Shawn was totally musical, insane, melodramatic, and his axe was a twelve-string. And that voice!

Steve, I wrote "O'Connor" above. Wrong. The church is on Metcalfe at Gloucester. On the left when going downtown.
