Another one for you: all those 'big' British rockers learned to sing that way because of, well, sure, Elvis, but mostly them English folks learned to sing like that because of Black blues music. 'Cause before that, Whites didn't generally sing with soul -- as it got called in those 'soul' years of the 70s.

addendum: And the funniest part is that them White Brits fed the music, Black music if you'll allow me, back to the sons and daughters of White North-American folks whose radioplay systems would never have allowed the original stuff to play (overall anyway, there are many exceptions). The Brits (who loved American blues) ended up supercharging rock after Elvis had been drafted and, sigh, Pat Boone was the top. Kind of thing...
