Celebrating the one and only Hounds of Love by Kate Bush released 40 years ago!

First hour of the show celebrates Kate Bush’s groundbreaking album Hounds of Love — a work of art extraordinaire! In the second hour, I will be tracing a soundworld that Kate Bush was very much a part of, and also one she helped expand. Enjoy!

Now I will play the second half of the album, a very different journey. Side two is called The Ninth Wave, and it plays as a continuous suite of seven songs. Together, they tell the story of a woman lost at sea, drifting alone in the dark night, half-asleep, half-awake. She slips between dreams, memories, and visions, facing fear, trial, and ultimately rebirth.

Musically, Kate takes us far beyond pop here: she blends Irish folk, sampled voices, sound design, and orchestral textures. It’s immersive — almost like a film score — but it’s still deeply emotional at its core. As listeners, we share in the terror of drowning, the strangeness of dreams, the haunting pull of ancestry, the vast stillness of the earth itself, and finally, the overwhelming relief of survival. The suite ends with ‘The Morning Fog,’ a burst of gratitude and love for life and for those we hold dear.

If side one is about how we relate to others in everyday life, side two is about survival, mortality, and the profound joy of simply being alive. Coming up "The Ninth Wave!"

Hey Lina, I read that Peter Gabriel first wanted Dolly Parton to do Running up that hill, and her agents said no, so Kate ended up doing it, which turned out perfect, but it would have been kinda neat to hear Dolly also singing that toon.
