An immersive evening in recordings from the Lebanese capital

I don’t think it gets more exciting than me sharing music from Lebanon, where you’ll hear a deep openness and acceptance of variation and experimentation. I’d say this spirit dates back to the 90s with the introduction of Soapkills, which we’ll hear later on. I’m excited to share this music with you! I hope this is Part 1 of many parts if there's an interest to hear more from Lebanon.

Soap Kills is an indie electro-pop band based in Lebanon. The group was formed in October 1997 when Zeid Hamdan and Yasmine Hamdan, both born in Beirut in 1976, decided to explore and combine their interest in classical Arabic song and electronic music, creating a unique fusion that resonated with listeners both locally and abroad. Their pioneering sound, which blended traditional Arabic melodies with experimental electronic beats, not only garnered a dedicated following but also set the stage for a new wave of artists in Beirut, many on this playlist tonight, pushing the boundaries of genre and cultural expression in the region’s music scene.

As we come to the end of tonight’s journey through the sounds of Lebanon, I hope you felt the soul, the history, and the resilience that echoes through each tune. Music has a way of transcending borders and connecting us, no matter where we are. . Thank you for joining me in this exploration, and as always, may these melodies stay with you long after the music fades. Until next time, take care and keep listening. Peace Heavies, and peace to my beautiful sisters and brothers in Lebanon, Palestine and Syria.
