She originally studied engineering at McGill but was drawn into Montreal's 1960s folk scene. She was the mother of Rufus and Martha Wainwright. She died of Clear cell sarcoma in 2010 - that year, the Meltdown in London held an all-star tribute concert for her.

Operating for 39 years until the Wende shut down their Leipzig operations, the East German secret police collected records during this time equivalent to the prior entire recorded German history. end to end the records are 180 km long. Corrosively for German society, the Stasi forced IM (information mitelbeiters), unofficial collaborators, to report on friends and family in order to avoid being persecuted and imprisoned themselves. These tracks, about the German divide and/or secret police, go out to people victimized by secret police who continue to operate in many countries today.
