Gord Walker interviews Katleen Felix about Zafen, Haiti's innovative new microfinance organization which is enabling thousands of Haitians living abroad to support micro-entrepreneurs in their own hometowns through crowd-funding.
Zafèn is a crowd-funded loan source for Haitian small enterprises that do not qualify for traditional bank loans or microfinance and otherwise would not have access to capital. It has raised nearly $2 million since 2010, mainly from Haitians living abroad; Zafen also raises donations for social projects in Haiti with community benefit, including clean water, education and the environment.
Zafen has now become Kiva’s first Haiti-based field partner supporting the Small Growing Business (SGBs) Sector. The move allows Kiva’s growing global community of 1 million on-line lenders to also support Haitian entrepreneurs, including many woman-owned businesses, as they grow and create jobs.
