The Return of Son of Gutbucket Comp!! 4 releases from Chant Records!!

Back in the drivers seat after the Funding Drive (many thanks to all who donated!!), with a look at the new The Return of Son of Gutbucket Comp, and finishing up with a good hour-and-20-minute look at a great new label from New York called Chant Records!!
Starting out with a feature on a great new comp from Cardinal Fuzz, featuring all sorts of great Canadian psych/space rock, like Moths & Locusts are diehard space-rock explorers hailing from the pulsating heart of Vancouver Island (formed ~2011); Saskatoon space-rock dreamers The Radiation Flowers (formed ~2015); Also hailing from Saskatoon, Shooting Guns are hard at work fortifying the heavy end of the psychedelic spectrum since 2010!

Finishing with one track from the 101-song-compilation offered by new New York Label Chant Records!! Founded by Jon Madof (Zion80, Rashanim, Matisyahu) and Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz (Yo-Yo Ma, John Zorn, Cyro Baptista, Yemen Blues). The label’s first event - a free, massive 101-song compilation called STRENGTH IN NUMBERS - is available now at ChantRecords.com. On November 1, Chant Records launched with the release of new albums by Zion80, The Fugu Plan, Darshan and Sandcatchers, and we will have a look at a few tracks from each of these bands, starting out with the Sandcatchers. Sandcatchers was formed by oud player and guitarist Yoshie Fruchter (Pitom, John Zorn, Cyro Baptista), along with Myk Freedman on lap steel, Michael Bates on double bass, and Tim Keiper on drums, Fruchter combines the Middle Eastern oud and Americana-infused lap steel to create a new sound inspired both by Arabic maqam and the Appalachian Trail. Called ‘a Middle Eastern pastoral Americana jamband’ by New York Music Daily.

Next up, The Fugu Plan’s MukashiBanashi is based on the secret customs and ancient folktales of Japan, exploring traditions of ritual, tribal, and spiritual music. The band is fronted by Yuka, a mesmerizing singer and composer from Sado Island, a place of banishment starting in the 8th century. MukashiBanashi pays tribute to the island’s preservation of the traditions of old Japan while incorporating a mixed bag of musical influences including Ennio Morricone’s film music, psychedelic rock and free improvisation. The album features a stellar band of musicians including Blumenkranz and special guest, master percussionist Cyro Baptista.

The next Chant Records Release to be profiled: Darshan, a groundbreaking collaboration between world-soul singer Basya Schechter (Pharaoh's Daughter) and esoteric indie rapper ePRHYME (Eden Pearlstein). Pharaoh’s Daughter has been called “one of the most original and exciting groups in the Jewish Music Movement” by Rhythm Magazine and ePRHYME has been praised by Tiny Mix Tapes for his “consciousness-raising Jewish hip-hop.” Joined by an all-star cast of musicians (as well as a choir), the result is a kaleidoscopic fusion of Hip Hop, Rock, World, Soul, and Jewish music.

And we finish up the Chant Records Feature with Jon Madof's own Zion 80, and their new release, Warriors (their third, following two albums on John Zorn’s Tzadik Records), focuses on Madof’s original songs and finds the band delving deeper into their singular mix of deep Afrobeat grooves, mystical Jewish melodies and improvisational madness. The band will follow the release of Warriors with an album of Zorn’s music from his acclaimed Masada songbook (on Tzadik Records) and tour dates in the US and Europe.
