Night Watch
Sunday January 11th, 2015 with Dāv Fot
2-Pin Din, Mexican Power Authority, Bailter Space, Papir, East Of Eden, Ungava!
This show is dedicated to the memory of CKCU volunteer Mark Valcour, though for those who knew him, know he was so much more. He ushered me into CKCU in '87 and taught me all about radio, live sound, record production, and a great deal about life in general. I don't think he would be all that impressed by trotting out his favourite songs or bands (though who didn't know he was an ardent Rolling Stones fan?), but he would want to know you're putting together a technically correct Radio Show. So, Mr. Mark, here's to you, your indomitable spirit and the excellence for which you strived in everything you did.
OK, I did play ONE Rolling Stones track (despite the fact that my feature said I would not) for Mark, my friend, radio mentor, record producer, live-sound go-to-guy and all-round Audi-Yoda. Rest in Peace. |
Waiting on a Friend Rolling Stones - Tattoo You |
As a pre-amble to the show, it will be a litany of features, as is customary for the first show of the year, starting with a band that is comprised of 2 guitarists - Andy Kerr (ex-Nomeansno), and Wilf Plum (Ex-Dog-Faced Hermans) in collaboration! I bestow 'Honourary Can-Con Status' on them for Andy Kerr's involvement! |

Now a 'double-feature' set - 4 tracks from a band that did their original stint in the mid-90's has re-formed with a less 'noise/hardcore/experimental' approach and is hitting the straight-up rawk... and then 4 tracks from the debut LP from Local powerhouse band Big Dick. They have a new LP coming out in Feb.! Watch for it! |

Going for something a little older now... an old favourite band of mine from the late-80's/early-90's from New Zealand called Bailter Space. I finally managed to get their 1st EP, released in '87 after rising from the ashes of noise/punk band the Gordons, and picking up Hamish Kilgour of the Clean on drums! |
Our Aim Bailter Space - Nelsh |
I'm in Love With These Times Bailter Space - Nelsh |
Separate Circles Bailter Space - Nelsh |
Now I will Live! Bailter Space - Nelsh |
Bailter Space makes for a good segue into more spacey material, and few come spacier than Papir, from Denmark! |

Next Feature - the 2nd East of Eden LP, released 1970. The 1st and 2nd LPs are great... then they lost a lot of that 'edge' that made them appealing to me, though they continued to release LPs until '78. |

Xhorkom East of Eden - SNAFU |
Gum Arabic East of Eden - SNAFU |
Continuing with my fascination with Q-prog, the one-and-only LP from 1977 by a band called Ungava. Must find out where these guys went to, surely musicians this good can't have absolutely disappeared. André Devito (guitar), Jacques Marois (percussion, vocals), Richard Fortin (bass, vocals), Martin Perron (keyboards), Maurice Bouchard (saxophone, flute) |
Hors d'Eden Ungava - Ungava |
Gorgo Ungava - Ungava |

Finishing up with the typically long song, and celebrating John McLaughlin's Birthday on Jan 4! |
