- A fascinating discussion with the one and only Daoirí Farrell with your co-hosts Gord and Robyn -
Little before Daoirí Farrell took the stage at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa last Thursday, July 10, he was gracious enough to sit down and have a bit of engaging banter (craic!) with yours truly. Daoirí is one of the most incredible individuals to have risen within the Irish folk singing tradition over the past fifteen plus years. His distinct voice and inspired bouzouki arrangements have captivated audiences the world over. Your co-hosts were so very fortunate to attend his performance after the interview and witness his magic firsthand. Daoirí's rapport with his interviewers was organic, authentic and chock-full of Irish wit. His interactions with the audience were no different, and everyone in the theatre left with the sense of having witnessed something special. Our time chatting with and listening to Daoirí was a delight, and we cannot thank him, his team, and the NAC team enough for coordinating such a lovely meeting. We hope you enjoy our conversation with Daoirí as much as we did, and if you happen to be in St. John's at Bannerman Park, catch his show for the Newfoundland & Labrador Folk Festival tonight on the main stage from 8:45 pm - 9:30 pm. It will be his last show out of three these past few days over on The Rock, so please give him a rousing send-off before he heads back home to the Emerald Isle. Daoirí, it was an absolute pleasure meeting you and hearing your music live. We hope to see you grace our stage in Ottawa again in the future, and we will keep our ears open for your next album. Sonny's Dream Daoirí Farrell - The Wedding Above in Glencree |
This beautiful banjo that once belonged to the late great Ron Hynes is now on display over at the Canadian Museum of History in Hull, QC. With it's lighthouse painted on the back, a quintessential Newfoundland image, the instrument stands as a tangible link to Ron Hynes' anthem: a song telling the story of ol' Sonny whose daddy was a sailor who would never come home. It is part of a special exhibit called "Retro – Popular Music in Canada From the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s" that will run until January 18, 2026. Many different genres are covered including the rich folk rock that came out of the 70s Atlantic Canada roots revival with trailblazers Wonderful Grand Band (Ron Hynes) and Figgy Duff paving the way for the likes of Great Big Sea and Spirit of the West.
