The Wavelength
Monday December 9th, 2024 with Joe Reilly and Wally Salem
Tonight we feature There Must Be A Hole In Your Memory Vol. 2 - A Tribute to The Sound and Adrian Borland - Wally Salem of the Beautiful Music joins me to discuss the music of Adrian Borland (1957-1999)
Wally Salem runs the independent record label The Beautiful Music, and he joins me on the show tonight to talk about Adrian Borland, the guitarist and singer who fronted the post-punk band The Sound from 1979 until 1988. He went on to work on other musical projects and several solo albums until his death in 1999 by suicide. Borland lived for years with depression and schizoaffective disorder and many of his songs reflect the mental health challenges he faced.
Wally's label, The Beautiful Music has just released a second tribute album to the music of Adrian Borland and the Sound, "There Must Be A Hole In Your Memory - A Tribute To The Sound & Adrian Borland Vol. 2." It features 18 carefully curated and meticulously recorded covers of songs from all across the Adrian Borland repertoire but focussing on his work with The Sound.
We showcase that new album this evening, juxtaposing some of the covers with the original recordings and featuring some classic songs by The Sound. We talk about our personal connections to these songs and share a bit about the history of Adrian Borland and The Sound - a truly underrated group from the 1980s.
Terry Banks sings and plays guitar with the Washington DC-based power trio Dot Dash and he joins us tonight to talk about The Sound and his group's cover of Heyday from the group's debut album Jeopardy.
I hope you enjoy listening to this program as much as I enjoyed putting it together with Wally.
