Friday Special Blend
Friday November 14th, 2025 with Susan Johnston. Micah Petti. Gianluca Petti.
Happy Birthday CKCU!! Les Belles Soeurs. Friday Night Folk feat. Matt Gower performing live!!!

In our first hour, a lively group of folks join us to talk about Michel Tremblay's Les Belles-Soeurs, which the Phonenix Players are staging at the Gladstone starting next Friday. About the play: "The tragi-comedy Les Belles-Soeurs is among the most important plays in French Canadian theatre history: for the original’s foray into joual - the working class dialect of Quebec - but also for its brave depiction of working-class women at their worst. Written by Michel Tremblay in 1965 at the time of the Quiet Revolution in Quebec, he is arguably one of Canada’s best living playwrights. Les Belles-Soeurs portrays 15 women expressing their anger, desperation and frustration loudly, rudely and audaciously. Germaine Lauzon has won a million stamps in a contest. She invites her family and neighbours into her kitchen to help paste them into booklets. Fighting for any power in their suffocating lives, the women yell, backstab, dream and steal in grand theatrical style. We are proud to have the Stephen Lewis Foundation's Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign as the recipient of our fundraising efforts for this production." In our second hour, Ottawa musician Matt Gower joins us to talk about Friday Night Folk, taking place tonight at the Art House Café. Doors at 8, Show at 9. Friday Night Folk is a bi-monthly concert series at Art House Cafe. On the first Friday of every other month Art House Cafe will feature two folk acts, hosted by local singer-songwriter Matt Gower. Sponsored by CKCU fm. About Matt: "Matt Gower has been involved in the Ottawa music community for over two decades. His songwriting incorporates folk, alt-country and old-time music weaved between timeless lyrics and dynamic vocals. Over the years Matt has performed with garage-folk band Capital Grass and the No Men and folk duo Fathom the Sea around the National Capital Region and Western Quebec. Throughout Matt’s musical journeys, a constant thread has held true: nothing carries more weight than connecting with an audience through the power of song."
