Alpha Music Program (AMP) profile The Alpha Institute (formerly Alpha Boys School) is a non profit vocational school for young men in need of social services and employment skills. Alpha offers skills training in five areas: music, screen printing, woodwork, barbering and landscaping. Vocational training is complemented by life skills courses, general education in math and English as well as access to counseling, medical services and social services. Since 1890 the school has been run by the Religious Sisters of Mercy, a Catholic order of nuns. Alpha students are 16 to 19 years old. The majority of Alpha students have not completed a mainstream education. Most Alpha students left high school early or were not in school regularly such that they do not have the family connections, community resources or educational background to sustain themselves or their families. Most students reside in Kingston's low-income neighborhoods. All of our students attend for free or their US$70 annual tuition is subsidized. Today, the Alpha Music Program is a performance-based program with complimentary courses in music technology (live mixing) and club-based activities in recording and production. Our objective is to prepare students for employment and help find employment. There are 20 students in the music program ranging from beginner to advanced. Alpha's music teachers are touring musicians and professional teachers at the local tertiary level music institution (Edna Manley College for the Visual and Performing Arts). The performance program is based on a unison music curriculum. Starting in February 2016, Alpha is introducing a new general academic program just for music students so that math and English instruction may integrate with vocational concepts in music. Alpha's music program began in 1893. Over the past 100 + years, alumni have become jazz innovators (saxophonist Joe Harriott, trumpeter Dizzy Reece), ska music pioneers (trombonist Don Drummond, saxophonist Tommy McCook) and reggae icons (Grammy nominee Winston Foster, singer Johnnie Osbourne) not to mention respected session and touring musicians all over the world. To share this legacy, in 2013 Alpha created Alpha Boys School Radio a 24/7 streaming station based on campus featuring music that has at least one Alpha graduate on every song: 26 South Camp Rd, CSO 5698, Kingston 4, WI | | 876-928-1345
